I recently did this to replace the heater fan which was giving me fits.  I
also took the opportunity to R&R the heater core even though the original
unit was not leaking.  If you have never done this before you need to plan
on a 2 day job.  Aside from removing and replacing the fan you might
consider cleaning the whole area as best you can, replacing the heater core
hoses if they are bad, check the heater box controls and replace any of the
actuator cables. Also check the air ducts and replace or tape if cracked.
Air conditioning aluminum tape is great for taping cracked ducts. Make sure
you re-seal the heater box properly with the clips you should have bought
from one of the VW guys on line (Van caf¨¦, bus depot, etc.) if the box in
your van is like the one in mine, a 1991 model. Use silicone sealer wherever
you see the case not sealing properly. Go slow, no hurry.  Removing and
replacing the dash will require some help, an extra set of hands. S an extra
I went down to home depot and bought a sheet of blue home A/C filter
material.  I fashioned a filter to fit in the front of the van where the air
comes in to the cabin.  That has helped keep dust and dirt down.  It will
pay I the long run if you take your time and do the job properly so you
willnot have to remove the dash again for a number of years.

It's 65 degrees here in SE PA and will be in the 70's tommorow. I'm
contemplating doing my dash removal for the leaking heater core and burned
out fan.  What is the ballpark estimage for the R&R of these?  Is it a 2 day
job? If so it will have to wait but if I can get it done in a day I might
try.
