In 2004 my wife and I made a trip to Brazil, and traveled up the Rio Negro during the high water season by boat. At a village, our group of 12 was scheduled to visit a fish farm some 5 miles inland on a dirt road. The "guide" had arranged "cabs." It turned out that they consisted of a 1960s era Rambler Ambassador in really rough shape, and a 1958 (so the driver said) VW Bus, also in extremely rough shape. The body was battered, but had been repainted in VW orange without the dents, which covered most of the body, being straightened. The floor was rusty, but seemed not to have holes in it. A passenger had to hold the door closed during the trip, and the frame drug on high spots in the road. On one fairly steep hill we all had to get out and walk up the hill. We made it to the fish farm. Meanwhile, our "guide" was trying to round up different vehicles for the trip back to the boat, but he didn't find any. We made it back. I took pictures of the two "cabs," but seem to have misplaced them. Though I have other photos from the trip, those are not among them. The bus did look better than the Vanagon in the LA Times photo, but probably was no more reliable. It worked for us, though.
