You can replace the boots yourself at home with a bench vise and a pair
of snap ring pliers. There are many web pages and You Tube videos that
show how to do this. If you pull the inner joint off (easy) you can
replace both boots by sliding the outer boot along the shaft. It sounds
like the place you took the shaft to was just being lazy for some
reason. That said if the joints are worn out then in my opinion it is a
better deal to buy a complete new axle than mess with your old one. If
you feel you need a new Lobro one those are available, but I also have
new EMPI shafts that are made in China for $125 each. I highly
recommend these as the quality level is very good and just because you
buy a Lobro axle doesn't mean that it is actually made in Germany.
Volkswagen has moved its CV joint manufacturing to China. So if you
went to the dealer to buy an OE CV Joint you are going to get something
made in China. It is all about the QC. If they have the proper QC in
place there will be no issues. I have been selling these for about five
years now and haven't had any issues with them. I used to sell the
rebuilt drive shafts (done here in the US) and had several problems with
them. I feel very confident selling the EMPI axles.
