Thanks Scott Larry et al. No. Not running and oil temp gauge. And I really think I should. Turns out that since I had to alter the Fox mount bracket to clear the stock gas Jetta oil filter, the diesel filter I bought ((same MY as my gas engine) is too big. Did a roadside oil change to 15w/40. No real difference that I can hear, but provides a little piece of mind. As long as I get home, I'm not overly concerned in the long term as I want to put that engine over to 50* at some point. I might consider getting the bottom end rebuilt before swapping the head etc. Scott: your comment about the intermediate shaft made me think. It's possible I installed the timing belt tighter than spec. Would a timing belt set too tight stress the intermediate shaft bearings? (If so I bet it's hard on the cam and belt tensioner) I set it by feel using the twist 90* method. No noise from tensioner. I'll double check with timing belt cover off and see if I hear anything from that area. Thanks again guys. Nice to have help when on the road! Neil in Florence heading North.
