Thers some things to remember about the physics/chemistry of these flooded cell batteries and their design.

The battery energy delivery rate, cranky amps, is governed by the amount of plate surface in contact with the electrolyte (acid). The more surface the higher the cranky amps. The less surface the better the deep discharge rating.

If you look around you can find lots of flooded cell physics articles.

The Gel Mat batteries have their own problems, namely they don't particularly like to be charged from your alternator.
