I installed a later model tranny and shift linkage into my '81

I had access of sorts (was air cooled.... accessed via vent at sill just behind front seats) to get at the bushing tab over gas tank. In your case you may need to drop the gas tank part way to access that tab. It has to be bent out of the way to accomodate the new front shift rod.
