two or more products may be made by the same company, but of different quality. Large vendors often specify details of a product to be sold under their label when they contract for its production. The specifications may differ from those of products made by the same company to sell under the maker's own label. Nowadays, with "on-time inventory" and outsourcing of parts production, identically labeled products may differ among runs. At one time, Consumer Reports would cross reference appliances to show which products with different labels were identical, such as a given model from Kenmore being identical with a given model from Whirlpool. They no longer do that, because of the variables that I mentioned.
