Bob, you either need a pickle fork or a ball joint puller. Either of these can be bought from Auto Zone and then taken back for a full refund once the work is done. It is their "tool loaner" program so you aren't scamming them or anything. A few wacks with a hammer and the pickle fork and the upper ball joint should pop right out. An air powered one is even better if you have an air compressor and an air chisel tool. It works like magic and virtually no effort. Occasionally I might have to heat up the area where the ball joint goes through the front spindle with a torch but this is rare.
