I know about, or can see the horrible damage winter salt does to everything.... including exhaust parts on vanagons.

I sure wish we all could have a foot deep 25 foot long WD-40 trough to drive through when we get home. that would help. and there's cleaning salty crude off ..like blasting with water .. even hot water, but that's a bother and not that practical.

I've been using some 'Flame Proof' exhaust paint lately ..goes to 1,400 F they claim, or 1.200 F perhaps. Seems to last well.. though haven't tried it for a year yet. and my environment is pretty benign compared to 'salty much' .

have two vanagons I suppose ... a winter beater you don't care about, and a good one for summer.

I do get up under there and treat surface rust a lot. Some vans I could spend 'whatever' # of hours treating surface rust everywhere.

Surface rust is super easy to deal with. Body cancer rust is harder..but not impossible to fix.

I hate to see rust spots on the sides of vanagons .. it's so easy to treat and stop forever. but left ....bad news.

all we have is .....................preventive measures like paint and metal treatment products. and cleaning. Be nice to drive through a set of 20 jets blasting hot water up under your van and into the wheel wells every time you pull in the driveway. that would help. a lot ! And then find a use for the salt that washes off.
