I guess I'm spoiled. If I chose to I could talk on the cell phone the whole
trip.
This is scary, really, I remember having to drop off the interstate to find
a payphone just to make a phone call!

Not the hills; the cell phone reception. Take a look at Verizon's service
map and notice the service coverage in Nevada. Las Vegas, Reno, and Tahoe
are pretty well covered; rest of state is not. Pretty typical of The West.
