If the previous compressor had an internal failure, then replacing should
include replacing the filter/dryer and the expansion valve. A clog in either
can result in destruction of the new one. Also the system should be cleaned
out. The rebuild will usually have a tag indication if there is any
lubricant in it and what type. There different R134a lubricants used. The
total quantity required is determined by the vehicle. You will need to look
that up.
R134a systems are best filled by volume. Do not rely solely on pressure
gauge reading to determine charge capacity.

This weekend I will putting a rebuilt AC compressor in my Jetta
Eco-Diesel. Do I need to put lubricant into the compressor before I
put the refrigerant in, and if so, how much?
