It is not good for most cars to be left to warm up.
Really..
it's a very bad practice..
high rpm, no load ...
it's an extremely rough thing to do on any car ..
particularly gasoline ones.
start it as gently as you can ..
then within half a minute ...or 'right away' ..drive it gently.
Ideally, where there is some load on it.
A very bad cold start scenario is the first few miles are downhill.
You'd rather have gently uphill, or even level ..
but 'drive it right away, and gently' ....when warmed up some, then drive
normally.
also ...keep heater temp lever off or nearly off, until some temp is showing
on the gauge.
( if heaters are on full from stone cold...
it may never warm up properly , or take, way, way too long. )
also ..
waterboxer vanagons ..
they must be driven until fully warmed up, every time.
about the worst thing you can do for one is fire it up stone cold, then
drive only about two miles.
They don't like that at all.
I would even use a block heater of some sort...
just to reduce the amount of time it's running very cold.
