I am not sure the perfect heater exists, but I do like the Propex 2800.   The new Atwood 8012 is a pretty good alternative at around $400.  It is 1 inch shorter than the suburban NTs and narrower.  And the 8012 draws only 1.8 amps.  It fits in the little cabinet by the fridge.  It is a 12K btu model so it puts out the just the right amount of heat.

Here is the furnace, you can find it about $100 cheaper in various places. http://www.ducktec.com./itm00026.htm

Here is the install in a vanagon westy: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/atwood_everest.php

I just picked up a used 7916 model, same size but higher amps and heat output.  Rather than a permanent install, I made a box for it and a cigarette plug outlet and quick disconnect propane hookup.  The box fits perfectly sticking out the side window and sitting on the sink unit. It is noisy, but I may try to find a window duct so I can leave the whole thing outside and just run a vent to the window, like some of the tent heaters.

The ideal for me would be a half price propex 2800 located somewhere that would reduce noise to a minimum.

All of the current models are far too large to fit, and produce such a large amount of heat that they seem ill-suited for van application. > > Karl > www.propexusa.com >
