Hi Michael,

Cold start, short run has always been classified by VW as "Severe Service".

Why? Because the engine is never fully warmed up it runs rich and does not get opportunity to evaporate off any of the combustion byproducts that accumulate in the oil. Oil will need to be changed every 4 weeks in these conditions. Otherwise the contaminants in the oil will dilute its lubricating ability and lead to premature corrosion of internal components.

Check your oil often if you use your vanagon in this fashion. You may find the oil level raises as gasoline and water accumulate in the crankcase. You will also find the oil thins out a bit and smells strongly of gas... Change it ASAP if this happens.

Happy Trails,
