Yes, unplug and remove the counter; it's in the way of the new full-length cable. Yes, the cable is factory-lubed, just install it.

I did this mod on my '87 Westy when I first got a few years ago.

Unplug the box, cut the wires, whatever...I wouldn't be surprised if you had to remove the box to lead the new cable properly.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't lubed at the factory, but Ken or someone will know.
