Subject: 85 Vanagon GL Rolling Chassis in North Texas needs a pasture
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi,

I have an '85 GL that I'm using as a donor van for my automatic->manual conversion. That being the case, the transmission and everything needed to control the transmission is gone. It rolls, is what it does.

It still has the engine in it, the condition is unknown. When I bought it, I started it and drove it far enough to see that the transmission functioned. The previous owner was selling it because coolant sprayed out all over the engine bay (he didn't find the source, except for the hole in the water pump where I've heard it comes out when the pump starts wearing out). He didn't want to deal with it any more. So the state of the engine is technically "unknown", possibly "ruined when the coolant leaked out" or "ruined when the stupid current owner drove it to test the transmission after the coolant had leaked out".

I just want rid of it, but I want it to go to someone who has some sort of vanagon use for it (rather than a "hey, I could melt this down" use for it, I mean). The metal is in very good shape in general.

I have contacted the one other person I know in my immediate area, but if he doesn't want it, it's up for grabs. I'm open to suggestions, as well, if anyone can think of something to do to keep things like doors and seats (upholstery is pretty shot on these, though) and whatever in the vanagon world.

The city apparently forbids you to keep an uninspected vehicle on your own driveway. I know I feel safer knowing that is illegal. Thank goodness. But I can't finish my project with two vanagons in the garage, so I've got to get rid of this one.

If you're interested in taking it off my hands, please pmail.

mike
