The tinned braid has two major characteristics: It's very flexible and it has much more surface area than a normal wire of equal volume. This makes it a much superior conductor of radio frequencies.

I'm not sure whether VW cared more about fatigue resistance or RF abilities. Both, perhaps. The stuff I have is nominal 3/8" -- that makes it a bit over half an inch when flattened, which is how it comes. I think the original strap might be nominal 6mm.
