    I have often wanted a way to open the hatch from inside, especially when
sleeping inside.

    I like the direct solution:  "Latch needs a pull to open from
inside....OK, drill hole, insert wire  to pull latch."  Problem
solved....Vanagons are really made for solutions like this.
