These (in the story) were young kids with a big hearse -- they couldn't possibly have afforded another spark plug after buying all 25 or however many old Cadillac hearses used in the late '50s or early '60s. Actually perhaps the wise mechanic did put in a new plug -- the major point of all these stories was the diagnostic puzzle, in this case the missing cylinder after said kids put in all new plugs.
