On the watercooled it's on the left side of the (manual) transmission, with the wires coming from the connection box on the engine room forward wall. There are two different plugs used, so if you replace the switch you may have also replace the plug. I don't know if it's a hard line, but my '84 had one plug and my '85 the other. The earlier switch was more substantially built, but IIRC I wasn't really impressed with the internals of either of them. I think I ended up rigging a relay to actually switch the lights and used the official switch to drive the relay. Not sure...

On the A/T the switch is part of the gear-selecting stuff up front.
