Often when the gauge just stops working it is a wiring problem. The connector contact at the sensor often corrode or the wires fail at the crimp. As quick test you can disconnect the sensor plug and either check for voltage (ignition on) connect the two terminals together. The gauge should move to full. Of the tow wires one is from the gauge and the other is to chassis ground. While I have seen it is rare for the gauge itself to suddenly fail. Other problems can be the connector on the cluster.

Hi All,

I'm looking at 90.9 of the Bentley which suggests using VW 1301 test equipment at two different settings to check the fuel gauge.

Does that someone translate to using a multimeter to check whether or not the fuel gauge works? Mine currently doesn't work and I thought I'd start here (even though in my transporters it was always the sender on the gas tank).

Cheers, Harry
