On an 82, it is on the very front left by the mount bracket down low. 2 wired that plug in. Short the wires together with key on to see if the lights come on. If so, bad swx. If not, bad somewhere else. Try bulbs first.

Can anyone offer guidance on the location of the backup light switch. I guess it helps to know the kind of auto. 1982 vanagon 4 speed?
