The owner's manual for my Sunbeam Alpine said that if I wanted quicker throttle response I could have N pounds machined off the flywheel, but that it wouldn't idle as well if I did.

On the Vanagon I've always thought it was the twenty horsepower per thousand pounds that limited the rev rate...the Alpine had a blazing 41 hp per thousand pounds.
