If it's the Rubbermaid step I'm thinking of, you can use a little blocking and a couple of largish hose clamps to attach a length of 1" SCH 40 PVC pipe to the concave outside of the off-fore leg. Make it a convenient height and cap the end. I think mine was maybe three feet? The old folks loved it -- nice handhold when stepping up and dead simple to haul it aboard after. I actually built it for the handhold purpose, but the other proved handy as well.
