I see what looks like filings too. It also looks like part of the bushing is "pushed" up into end. Like the starter engaged but jammed against the bushing at an angle. Is that bushing bronze? Can't recall. Is it possible the starter wasn't secured properly, didn't line up with that bushing? Years ago, my '58 Beetle cranked really slow. Turned out that bushing was worn out. IIRC, there should be some lube on that bushing. Looks dry to me. Neil.
