  At the recommendation of Dennis Haynes, several months ago I put a set
of General Altimax HD 205/70R14's on my '88 GL at a cost of $65/ea -
installed, balanced and mounted. These tires have been really good
performers. I drive paved roads 99% of the times and for an "88 GL
driven under my conditions I would recommend them as well. I am about to
get a second set for '88 GL Vanagon #2. Prices have jumped
substantially, however. But they are still cheaper than many a lesser tire.
