Hi Peter,

Last time I did this it was August, and I was working in my driveway. I removed a grenaded engine and transferred its FI, cooling and exhaust components to a "new-to-me" longblock. The longblock required about an hour's additional work to remove two damaged exhaust studs, but was otherwise in good condition.

If I were doing it again I wouldn't quote the job less than 12 hours. I also wouldn't guarantee that it wouldn't go higher if unforseen problems cropped up. This is particularly important if a used exhaust system has to be transferred....

Heck, just this past weekend I swapped the coolant temp sensor on my wife's 88, and as I removed the clip that holds it in place it broke apart in my hand. If I had been away from the house at the time, I would have been stranded. Luckily for me I had a spare engine close by that could offer up a replacement. Such are the risks one takes when one chooses to wrench on a 22YO vanagon.

Happy Trails,
