A while ago I mentioned the All Data Do it yourself web site. It is times like this where there can be a lot of value. They offer the shop standard labor rates most tasks. There are a lot of variables for an engine swap and there will be a lot of parts that will not or should not be reused. Clutch parts, seals, hoses, motor mounts, etc will add to the cost. A long block swap with moving of all accessories and exhaust will be somewhere between 12 and 16 hours. Re working old parts, cleaning and painting etc. will add to this time. If things do not work immediately add time for fine tuning, diagnoses and additional repairs. And then there will be discovery of why the original engine failed and that repair also. I guess the local tech was not getting normal pay for your swap or at some point he realized that this is a monster project. BTDT too many times on used swaps.

The sagaof switching engines continues. My local Tech has bailed on my engine swap. To be honest his work place is extremely busy and extra time until well after the holidays is mandatory. So he's shot after a 10 day.

A local "shop" tech who is extremely experienced on Vanagons is going to give me a price on flipping engines.

Who wants to take a guess at this mysterious number?

Regards to all
