FWIW though, the filler elbow appears to be the same part for all years

from Bus-Boys website:

"251-201-119D Gas Filler Elbow, 1980 to 1991, Federal $26.40"

Odd because the filler elbow off my '81 would have to stretch a fair amount to fit the '85 pipe. This coincides with what you're saying re:
