   I recently added some  inexpensive Chain Auto Parts clearance lights to
my van, and got the brightest bulbs I could for the existing taillights and
side marker lights.

  The clearance light fixtures I got are unobtrusive, yet quite bright.
They contain two bulbs and with a little modification I wired them into the
existing taillights so that one bulb coincides with my normal running lights
(tail light) and the other ones light up when my regular brake light bulbs
do.   So not only do I have twice the lights back there, but also these
secondary rear lights are right at driver's eye level for anyone behind
you..  Vanagon stock taillights are waaay low, expecially when you are in
stop and go traffic.

  I took some quick and crummy pics showing these on my van...You can get an
idea from my Picassa page.   Stringing the wires was a bit tedious, but not
complicated.
