And I'd like to add that I just ordered the headlight and hard start relay kits from Jay and WOW! The quality of his kits is fantastic, instructions are great, and I received them very quickly. I was going to bring the van into the garage today and install both sets, but <sigh> it looks like I'm taking the wife and daughter Christmas shopping instead :-) Seriously folks, if you need these relays, order them from Jay. Hi David,

I sell Vanagon headlight relay kits for $27.50 plus shipping. That is just over half the price generally found elsewhere on the web. I have plenty in stock, ready to ship if you would like a set. There is information on my website https://sites.google.com/site/vanagonheadlightrelays/ about the relays and the various headlamp upgrades that have been mentioned as well.

One thing that hasn't been discussed yet is to be sure that the inside surface of your headlight lenses are nice and clean. This can make a noticeable difference in the output from your current lights and only takes a few minutes. I used to run the Hella 80/100W bulbs http://tinyurl.com/2vytw35 in my '87 Wolfsburg before I swapped in a set of round headlamps from an early van. I would say the 80/100W bulbs with a set of relays is about the best bang for the buck you can get with stock headlight lenses. Since all filament based bulbs degrade over time, you should replace your high beam bulbs as well if they are more than a year old http://tinyurl.com/2ay5rus. There are 100W H3 bulbs available as well, but I would recommend the standard 55W bulbs for the high beams, since the heat of the higher wattage bulbs in the small inner high beam lens can sometimes lead to greatly shortened bulb life. Be sure to check the aim of your headlamps as well http://tinyurl.com/35kw8q9 , badly aimed lights won't give good results regardless of the bulbs you are running.
