I don't know if this applies to your Vanagon or not. When my cruise went out
it was at the connector in the steering column. The wires were so tight in
length that the connection pulled apart. A wire pulled off the pin in the
plastic connector. I had several instances of not enough slack causing a
break in the circuit for various components.
