I installed metal pipes from an '85. I see what you mean. The metal pipes were used on gas and diesel models. Searching BD website, shows a fuel tank with 70mm fill hole for diesel http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=251201075AD During the air cooled to water cooled swap, I installed the coolant pipes before fuel tank. IIRC, there weren't any screw holes for the pipe support clamps, or, since I made one or two of the clamps, I may have drilled new holes that were slightly off the mark. Either that or the P-side pipe is turned slightly toward the P-side.
