well, people are always wanting some easy bolt-on power.

a *properly* engineered turbo complete kit for a waterboxer 2.1 'could' work .

some factors ..besides bolting the thing on. .......the exhaust and intake plumbing and oil feed and return .. besides that part.

one, it puts more strees on the engine ....and waterboxers are weakish in the head sealing department anyway ... next, unless you have knock sensor igntion the compression ratio should really be lowered, with different pistons. then there is fueling .. and ignition mapping in the ecu ... so actually, you'd like an ECU with different fueling and timing curve mapping.

that's what factory turbo installations have .. it's a whole package. they don't hang a turbo in an existing engine. they put in piston oil squirters, they lower the compression , they may use a cyldinder head of better material. they may use sodium filled exhaust valves , etc. they have an ecu programmed for turbo use , and so on.

so sure ....go ahead, you can get 'some gain' by just hanging a turbo on ... I just wouldn't expect a perfectly sorted out excellently running engine unless you really get, deeply, deeply into it. the right way to do it would be to put in a Subaru 2.0 or 2.2 turbo engine .. the 'whole package' turbo-wise, so to speak, ecu and everything. . There are 2.5 turbo subaru engines too. It would be fun to do a 2.0 to 2.2 subie turbo engine .. it's been done quite a few times I beleive.

oh ..another thing to consider .. good turbo installations like an intercooler ...yet more plumbing and complexity.

have fun ! Scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daryl Christensen" <daryl@AATRANSAXLE.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 10:07 PM Subject: Re: Turbo for Vanagons?
