I wouldn't doubt that it was. FWIW, my previous Vanagon, an '84 Westy, never did have a properly working temp gauge. I bought it with a seized engine, so I don't know if it worked before. I stuck a used 2.1 in it and at first it worked. Then the temp gauge and the fuel gauge would drop to zero in unison. When one started working, so would the other one. I checked every connection, replaced the resistor on the instrument gauge, the gauge itself, the sending unit-nothing ever fixed it. Both gauges worked maybe 20% of the time. And yes, it is scary driving a waterboxer without a working temp gauge! Jeff
