Peter, this tells me you haven't read the Bentley instructions yet. Go read them. Also buy a Haynes from Bus Depot (sole US supplier) for a less factory-oriented view on things.

If you haven't got a Bentley, get one pronto, and make sure it's the paper copy. Your instructor and his students will find it much easier to work with, and practical aspects aside it's better for the spirit of the thing to have three pounds of Vanagon in your hands. If it's a um well-loved copy that's much better.

Once you've gotten what you can from the books, bump heads with the shop guy -- preferably hire him to come out for the evening and drink beer with you while you look at books and beasts and write up a list of questions together. Send those questions. You'll get better answers, and more freely given ones as well.

Yours, David
