We've never been pulled over, one was our family car, a Wolfsburg for 10 years. And now the Syncro for 5 years. They do not look funky, all the exterior was always in good shape, that could be a factor. Only exception is when I let the registration lapse for a couple of weeks, a CHP was right behind me, and got a fix-it ticket.

The main event was being on tour in the 70s, 2 of us guys, long hair. The vehicle was a '66 Chevy van, with "mags" and lots of exterior mods appropriate to the period. We were coming back into the US from Canada in Minnesota, after the drive from Michigan north of Lake Superior. The border guard asks "what is your business in the US". Response, "duh, I don't know, we are just kinda driving to California". Secondary search for 2 hours, the 2 of us inside the building for strip search and even the bend-over! They found nothing, sent us on our way. Man was that a lesson -- brutal honesty is not always the best policy, and a little more positive spin helps everyone! And being a US citizen offers no guarantee of better treatment at the border.
