The Mazda Bongo Friendee van is widely available in the UK as an import used vehicle from Japan (same side steering wheel - rules allow import of >10 year old vehicles). My brother has one such vehicle (the 'Free-Top' version with an electric pop-top roof) & having driven it, I can say it's certainly not a Vanagon Westy, but then the only Westy's I have seen in the UK are rotten with rust and/or very expensive. For around $10k, you can get a clean 10-12 year old AWD pop-top 'weekender' (with kitchen as option) with a solid 2.5 litre diesel (Ford Rangler pick-up heritage). Of course, he's still jealous of my rust-free California '87 Westy with much better camper interior, walk-through cab, high ground clearance, etc. It's definitely not a Vanagon Westy, but for some, perhaps a good choice and certainly for my brother who has never had to open the 'bonnet' (aka hood) in 2 years... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Bongo Mike '87 Westy (SF Bay Area)
