Disengage by receding or by spinning freely? Like Scott says this is an automatic starter and it appears complete with its bearings, if anybody has a spare starter can you check how easily this gear is supposed to be spinning? I don't think mine would ever recede! I'm concerned that the torque spinning a little gear on a big motor gear would loose lots of motor energy! Another reason to get on with life and convert the van to electric! Oh lord let it rain bundles of cash (or batteries, motor and controller :) !
