Hi Jeff,

Dad's 85 westy went through a trial like this a couple years ago. The problem turned out to be holes in the evap tanks in the front wheel wells. These were taking on water, which was then running into the fuel tank and fouling the motor.

Dad capped off the expansion tanks and hasn't seen the problem since.

Another hint: try troubleshooting this at night; if it is an ignition issue it'll be a lot easier to see a rogue spark plug leak when you're working in the dark.
