If it's _only_ the left tire, it may the camber adjusted. Toe would cause wear to both front tires. But, unequal camber usually causes a pull to one side. If it's not pulling, and is only wearing on one side, I'd look first at the ball joints, next at the tie rods for a cause.

To answer your question, the best alignment would be had by getting a new tire, then immediately getting an alignment.
