Hi Scott,

We're talking air-cooled here. In which case a cylinder head temp gauge is far more effective than an oil gauge. I have both in my aircooled bus, plus an oil pressure gauge as well. Oil temp will trend on a hill, but MUCH, MUCH slower than the CHT. By the time the oil gets hot enough to notice you can have the heads FAR too hot, and the valve seats will fall out as it cools.
