  Zoran, Scott et al,

Finally there was a combination of free time and nice
weather all at once allowing me under the Syncro to see
what's happening with the shift linkage.  Here's what I found:

    * Boot over the ball joint where the linkage attaches to
      the shift rod at the transmission has disintegrated.
    * Boot at shift rod entry point at transmission is also
      shot.
    * Fresh oil around the shift rod on the transmission.
      Needs new seal.
    * Transmission oil level good.
    * Bushings all looked OK and seemed tight.
    * Cleaned up all the crud, and lubricated all moving parts.
    * Cleaned and lubricated the shift rod at all of the
      carrier points along the length of the rod. Observed
      rod movement improved significantly while manually
      moving it while under the Syncro.

Once back inside (after changing clothes) the shift action
is remarkably improved.  Gear selection is very positive,
and the movement of the shift lever is smooth and fluid.

Next Steps:

    Order boots and seal.
    Install same during the next periodic maintenance cycle.
