I had a Mini that would do the same thing - I found squirting the plug lead ends and the distributor with WD40, letting it dry and trying again would often get it to start. There used to be this spray on plastic sealant stuff you could get for ignition systems. You'd let it dry out completely, then spray everything to seal it.
