I texted the guy and told him I would be down tomorrow to get the van and
asked about having everything organized by cylinder. He told me he would
see me tomorrow, didn't answer the organization question. I already paid
for the van so I'm committed now. As mentioned, he's a long time air
cooled guy so I'm thinking he did it as a matter of course but on the off
chance he hasn't for some reason kept everything isolated and marked, what
is the potential recovery process? Pistons to cylinders seem critical, they
should have the arrow for orientation so that is ok. Is the issue the rings
taking a set to the cylinder bore over the 60k it was running? Can I do ring
gap checks or try to McGyver up a bench compression test to sort this out?
I work for a German special machine company so I have access to a Zeiss, a
contour tracer and a lot of metrology tools if required.
Thanks for list tolerance of the endless string of silly questions. I
really want to get this thing on the road but I want to do it correctly,
doing everything needed and possible while the engine is out of the van.
Joe

Thanks for the information. This guy has been doing VW engines for quite a
while so I'm hoping he has everything matchmarked.

The pistons have to go with the cylinders they were originally with.
That is about all that is critical. You should be able to mix and match
the rest.
hey ken I have found it pays to keep the lifters matched to their lobe,
they tend to wear in a certain pattern seeing as the do rotate.mixing them
can cause failure, push rods don't seem to matter as much. pistons and
clylinders should also kept together as you stated . later mark dearing
