At only 175,000 miles eh? That's shocking...
It sounds as though your Subaru engine is the DOHC variety. Not all of them
are dogs - I have a friend with a '98 with over 400,000 kms on it and its a
great car.
My 2.5 SOHC came to me with approx 60,000 miles on it and its been powering
my Westy like never before for almost 10,000 miles so far with nary a
hiccup. When this engine dies I'll definitely replace it with another.
