“Freeze plug” is a slang term used for the core plugs that are pressed into the block and it’s been used so much that if you go by a auto parts store and ask for them they know exactly what you want.

And they aren’t chilled before being pressed in. The plug is stamped from steel with a deep, raised, tapered rim. The top of the rim is larger than the hole and the bottom is smaller. The plug is pressed in at the factory and is held in by spring tension only.

I thought the term freeze plugs came from the chilling if a tightly fitting plug prior to fitting due to right clearances. Maybe?

Chris.
