There's hope for you. I just bought a rolled VW GTI - going to put the 1.8t in my vanagon. Virtually everything associated with the power train is in great condition -- it runs great - just messed up top & sides. So you could take something like this and migrate the coolant system and controls along with the engine swap. A bit of mounting for the radiator & air conditioning system and some longer hoses and you'd be good to go.
