The brown is very crumbly after a certain age, exactly like a cookie that you can keep digging your fingernails into until it's just dust. Not always but mostly. I've kept my 83 in very nice condition by taking the dash, while I had it out, down to get scanned at a local paint shop. They mixed me up a can of spray paint that exactly the right color for headrests, door escutcheons, heater vents, rear view mirror, etc. I spray easy-to-get black parts and they look perfect.
