Al,

Surprisingly, they were not bad at all. I think it had to do with the when we were there -- July 15 to August 9.

When we were in Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the mosquitoes, black flies, etc were pretty bad and the night before we got on the ferry to Newfoundland was really rough with mosquitoes.

My body chemistry is such that the bugs really make my life miserable and I made some comment along the lines of "if they are as bad in Newfoundland as they are here, we aren't staying long". The entire picture changed in Newfoundland and I really did not have a problem. Granted, we did spend a good bit of time on the coastline with pretty good winds all the time which probably helped.
